Introduction
The electronic resume or online resume does not differ from the traditional printed version in purpose. Both are powerful selling tools, that outline your work skills, qualification and work experience so that an employer can see, at a glance, how you can fit into their organisation.
There is however, a marked difference in the way your resume is being processed in both the methods. While the old fashioned paper resume is written for quick skimming by the human eye, the web based or online resume is written to be searched by the 'digital eye' (a synonym for search programs). Therefore it is essential that the job seeker wanting to post their resume online must first understand this difference and limitations applicable in these conditions before he can craft a resume suited for an electronic environment. In the following lines, we try to give exactly these inputs which would help the jobseekers to make a perfect online resume through jobsomega.com resume builder (online resume hosting form). The guidelines and tips to be kept in mind while completing each field of the resume hosting form is given seperately below.
Login/Personal Particulars
Please provide a User Name and Password of your choice in the space provided in the top right hand corner of the resume hosting form. Both User Name and Password may consist of alpha numeric characters and should have number of characters within the limits specified against each. The User Name shall be unique. So please confirm the availability of the User Name selected. (You may take the help of our staff if needed)
If your name does not have a last name part, please enter your initial in the last name fields and enter only your name in the first name field (without initial)
While entering the date of birth, take care to enter the details in the required order (DD/MM/YY) only.
It is always recommended to provide alternate telephone and email IDs in the columns provided for the same, because it gives an additional contact point in case of failure of original details. Under the email ID field please provide active and valid IDs which you are able to check regularly for receiving correspondence from potential employers without fail.
While entering the phone numbers, please see that you are including the STD codes also. Also please indicate the source of the number (Residence/Office) in order to help the employers to deliver the message correctly and promptly.
Resume Heading
The information you enter here is very important because this is going to be the title of your resume when it is displayed. The words shall be so chosen that on the one hand it must attract the attention of the job provider and on the other hand it should give an overall picture about the candidate in a couple of words eg., 'Marketing Executive with 3 years FMCG experience' and 'Mechanical Engineer with CAD and PRIMAVERA experience'.
Target Job Category & Area of Specialisation
Remember selection of this data is very important hence all the future resume short listing and job alerts are based on this information. Please ensure that the target job category and area of specialisation should have some relationship with your current experience or the core area of experience of your career. In order to widen the scope of shortlisting, an alternate job category and area of specialisation is recommended though not mandatory. (Refer Annexure I for the list of job categories and job specialisation.)
Job Preference
Selecting the desired job options like job type, preferred job location and desired salary from the given options would make the shortlisting or job search more accurate and relevant. At the same time specifying these information in no way limit your negotiating scope in future. (Refer Annexure II for "Salary Range Options" and "Preferred Job Location")
Current Position Level
Revealing your current position level in the organisation where you are currently working would help the prospective job provider to make an exact assessment of your credentials and work out a more realistic compensation package for you. This would also help to optimise the job alert messages you will be receiving later from the portal.
Work Experience Details
First mention the total number of work experience and do not forget to mention the current work status, whether "Employed" or "Unemployed". If the current status is indicated as "Employed" please ensure that your work Experience I reflects the details of current/latest job. The second most relevant and important work experience can be reflected in the work experience II, no matter whether that job preceeds immediately the first job or not. All other additional work experience can be covered in the "Text Format Resume" which is displayed along with the standard format. While completing the Job Profile, make sure that you include all the specific details of the job you were responsible for. Quantifying the performance you have achieved while carrying out your responsibilities would certainly make your resume distinctive as compared to your competitors Eg. You can specify that the production levels have increased by so much percentage after you took over the responsibility or as compared to previous year.
Qualification Details
Mention your highest qualification or those qualification which are most appropriate to the target job selected, under "Qualification Level" I and II fields. In case you have more than two qualifications, please include the same under the additional qualification and text resume. (Refer Annexure III for the list of Qualification). In case your qualification is not found in this list please provide the details of your qualification in the above fields.
Additional Qualification/Training Attended
Under this column, apart from the additional qualification, various training programmes attended, any special incentives, appreciations, awards or achievements won by the candidate can also be included.
Key Skills
The key skills possessed by you related to the target job may be listed here. Try to include as many key skills as possible because these details are searched mandatorily by the programme against the job posting for shortlisting and job alert messages. The key skills are also prominently displayed whenever your resume is displayed on the portal. The selection of key words must be done in such a way that it gives an accurate idea about the credentials of the candidate. Eg., For a marketing professioal the key skills could be (a) institutional sales (b) presentation skills (c) brand promotion. However for an IT professional the key skills could be (a) Oracle (b) Unix (c) WAP etc.
Additional Information
Giving upto date information in this section would give you an edge over others who have not provided the same, and also help the prospective job provides to make quick decisions regarding the selection. You can also indicate the identity status of your online resume here. If you mark this as 'Yes' your personal and contact information will be withheld whenever your resume is displayed in the site.
Text Format Resume
Always make it a point to provide a copy of your detailed resume (hard copy or soft copy) while submitting the duly completed resume hosting form, which will be inserted along with the online resume for reflecting any other additional credentials not covered in the standard resume hosting form.
